Developer Square Enix has not indicated exactly why the second installment of the planned trilogy is titled Rebirth, so for the moment it could have several meanings. Considering the game will no longer be a carbon-copy of the original story, it is fitting for it to drop the Remake tag, since technically this is not the case. Events such as Biggs surviving the Sector 7 Plate collapse and Barrett being stabbed by Sephiroth differ from the original, which sets up further potential changes in the sequel....

One specific part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade’s new DLC marks the first step in this direction for the series, with some rumors indicating that the next full title will tread further into more mature content. This could be a risky move from a marketing perspective for the series with a possible M rating limiting the selling potential, but could be exactly what fans have been hoping for as players have aged past the current target demographic....

In the event that the next part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake doesn’t release as DLC or extended episodes added onto the initial release, it’s likely that Part 2 will release as its own installment. That does unfortunately leave the game in a situation where the next release will have to both continue the gameplay loop, but it will also need to change enough so that it doesn’t feel like more of the same if it wants to stand out as a standalone release....

However, there is a rather odd wrinkle in the middle of this otherwise positive situation. As revealed at the end of the last trailer, FF7 Remake is remaining exclusive to PlayStation platforms for at least six more months, and Intergrade’s new content will only be playable on PS5. This also may have ramifications for future Square Enix releases, including Final Fantasy 16, Forspoken, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 itself....
