Despite the odds, Nintendo managed to put Sora from Kingdom Hearts in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the final roster spot. Fans had known for some time that whoever the final character ended up being, would be the end of Ultimate, with Nintendo reiterating numerous times prior to Sora’s announcment. In the wake of Sora’s arrival, fans have been left to consider all that has transpired in Ultimate’s three-year history, and what the next Smash Bros. game may look like.

A new tweet from the official Nintendo Versus account brings players one step closer to the end of Ultimate. The update is Version 13.0.1, and will include “the final fighter adjustments,” implying this may be the end of Ultimate’s updates. Nintendo reminds players that “replay data from previous versions will be incompatible” once the update is performed, and so players should convert their replays to video in the vault before updating the game. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s last new spirit event was held recently, with future events just being repeats of previous ones.
Like a new weapon in Call of Duty, with every new character introduced in Ultimate, Nintendo is likely already preparing what sorts of balancing fixes must be made. It is not that every time a new character is introduced, they are immediately broken, it is more so as players get more time with the character, putting them through the paces and such, do new bugs and exploits begin revealing themselves. Naturally, the replies of Nintendo Versus’ tweet is filled with people pitching their wished nerfs and buffs, praying their favorite (or most hated) character get balanced accordingly. Others are hoping that Nintendo fills out the final three stage void on Ultimate’s stage select screen, though that seems unlikely.
As the update gets closer, Nintendo will likely post its notes about which aspects of the game are being tweaked. After this update, this may be the final state of Ultimate, unless players decide to play on an older version of the game, but that introduces a wealth of other problems. Despite this, the future of Ultimate remains bright, considering Nintendo’s partnership with Panda Global for official Smash Bros.’ tournaments, meaning the franchise won’t be dropping off anytime soon.
