Still, the genius behind what has become one of gaming’s biggest series has been busy behind the scenes. After a report emerged late last year that Mistwalker would release a game in 2017, it seemed like only a matter of time before an official announcement was made. Earlier today, that announcement finally came, as Mistwalker will be unveiling its newest game on June 22 during a Famitsu live stream.

While there hasn’t been much in the way of detail regarding the game, it seems to be a bigger deal than the relatively low-key mobile releases that Mistwalker has become known for over the past five years. Sakaguchi has recruited Final Fantasy and gaming music legend Nobuo Uematsu as one of the guests for the streaming event, and with the 30th anniversary celebrations for Final Fantasy still fresh, all signs point to the fact that Mistwalker could be embarking on a big JRPG undertaking in honor of Sakaguchi’s roots in the industry.

Other than the fact the announcement will be taking place and that Uematsu will be a guest during the stream, however, no information has been provided on Mistwalker’s new game or what platforms it will be on at this time. Unfortunately, it appears that the stream will only air in Japanese, so interested parties who don’t speak the language will have to wait for an official translation during or after the event. Still, Sakaguchi’s name carries a lot of weight in the RPG genre, and fans of JRPG gameplay will likely cross their fingers for an ambitious project from the innovative mind behind the earliest days of Final Fantasy.
