This was confirmed by Square Enix at Tokyo Game Show 2019. At the event, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will have multiple modes. Players can play through it on Easy or Normal difficulty, or they can choose Classic Mode. Classic Mode adjusts the combat so players only have to worry about selecting options from a menu, just like how combat worked in the original Final Fantasy 7.

“In the original Final Fantasy 7, you would wait around until the ATB Gauge fills up, and then select a move to initiate your attack,” the official Final Fantasy 7 Remake Twitter account explained. “With Classic Mode in FF7R the team have re-created the same style of play!”

Since some fans were genuinely disappointed to learn that Final Fantasy 7 Remake wasn’t going to have turn-based combat, this seems like the best alternative. Now fans can choose whether or not they want to experience the new combat system, which looked impressive in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake E3 gameplay demos, or play through with turn-based combat. Everyone wins. Plus, it adds quite a bit of replayability to the experience since a turn-based playthrough may be different enough to warrant someone go through the game more than once.

The reveal of an optional turn-based combat system for Final Fantasy 7 Remake will likely make the upcoming game even more popular with fans. In this way, it can cater not only to the old-school audience who grew up with the original, but a new crowd as well. It will be interesting to see if the final product is able to live up to all this hype, but based on what we’ve seen so far, chances are good that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will deliver.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on March 3, 2020 for PS4.
