The Tokyo Game Show may have ended almost two weeks ago, but Square Enix still had a surprise for fans this week by releasing previously TGS-exclusive footage showcasing the new game’s take on the fight with the giant beast Abzu.

While the UI text is in Japanese, the gameplay footage does a good job of conveying itself through action. Viewers get to see Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith show off a broad range of attacks and abilities fighting Abzu (or Aps as it was localized back in the original), as well as Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s ability to fluidly switch between characters on the fly to get the most out of their unique skills.

The real highlight of the footage, however, is the appearance of the summon character Ifrit and the first good look at FF 7 Remake’s take on summons in action. Ifrit’s only there for a limited time, but the fiery giant makes a big impression fighting in real-time alongside the much smaller party members, and lighting up Abzu with a dazzling array of explosive attacks.

Players will meet Abzu in the sewers of Midgar, deep underneath the mansion of crime boss Don Corneo. When exactly is something of a mystery, however. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just the first entry in a multi-part series, a full game-sized retelling and expanding of the original FF 7’s Midgar section. Whenever they cross paths with Abzu, it’ll probably come later than some fans were expecting.

Despite that, Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks to be shaping up nicely. Every new glimpse has given fans something interesting to look forward to, and these have been coming at a solid rate. It seems Square Enix is pretty confident in its reimagining of one of the greatest RPGs of all time, and it seems it’s confident that the new gameplay, as well as Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s turn-based Classic Mode, will succeed in drawing in players old and new.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be out on March 3, 2020 for the PlayStation 4.
