As it turns out, Square Enix is utilizing Unreal Engine 4 to power Final Fantasy 7 Remake. This may come as a surprise to fans, as Square Enix has their own in-house Luminous Engine. The Luminous Engine has proven more than capable of providing the visuals needed for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, as it is being used for Final Fantasy 15, a game that is no slouch in the graphics department itself.

It’s not clear why Square Enix decided to go with Unreal Engine 4 instead of their own engine, but in the meantime, Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase has released a statement on the matter:

While most of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is being made using Unreal Engine 4, the lighting is being handled by the Enlighten technology from a company called Geomerics. Geomeric plans on working closely with Square Enix during the development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to ensure that their tech is being utilized to its full potential.

After its surprise reveal at E3, many didn’t expect to see a lot about Final Fantasy 7 Remake for quite some time. Square Enix promised more Final Fantasy 7 Remake news by the end of the year, but even so, a surprising amount of information about the game has been pouring in since the PlayStation Experience this past weekend.

Now that fans know what technology is going into powering the superb graphics seen in the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake gameplay trailer, they can rest easy knowing that the rest of the game will likely look just as good. While we’ve had glimpses of the train sequence from the beginning of Final Fantasy 7 and the like, it will be exciting to see how other classic Final Fantasy 7 scenes and locations look with the power of Unreal Engine 4. Cloud’s cross-dressing scene, for example, is sure to be a sight to behold with these massively improved graphics.

Some fans have expressed concerns over Final Fantasy 7 Remake since its presentation at the PlayStation Experience. The new battle system has left some feeling uncertain about Square Enix’s ability to deliver an experience that is on par with the original, and the game’s episodic nature has also been a source of controversy. While these factors may hamper the Final Fantasy 7 Remake experience for some, at least fans can rest assured that the game will look gorgeous thanks to Unreal Engine 4 and the Enlighten lighting tech from Geomerics.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake has an unknown release date, and currently its only confirmed platform is the PlayStation 4.
