The release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has come alongside the resurgence of the seventh main-series game’s popularity, being joined by a plethora of spinoffs. Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier saw the popular RPG transitioned into a battle royale setting while Ever Crisis is currently in development as a mobile game based on the Final Fantasy 7 saga. Final Fantasy 7 Remake has also seen several adjacent titles with the PS5-exclusive Intergrade chapter and the recent Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 remake. Now, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s director is teasing fans about the next chapter in the story.

During a recent series of end-of-year interviews with Gematsu, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Yoshinori Kitase spoke briefly about the ongoing development of the sequel. Kitase expressed the excitement built up by Square Enix’s campaigns surrounding the remakes and claimed an update will come “when the timing is right.” Kitase served as producer on the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake, as well as acting as the director for the original Final Fantasy 7.

While Kitase was not able to give any hard information about updates for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, fans have already started to speculate about the second chapter of the remake trilogy. Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura has already revealed that many regions from the original Final Fantasy 7 will return in Rebirth, but not in the same order. Bosses have been a popular point of fan theories related to the sequel, with iconic bosses like the Turks and Jenova among the most popular choices.

The impending release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth comes as just one of two major new entries in the long-running RPG franchise planned for 2023. A trailer featured during the 2022 Game Awards would confirm the release date for the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy 16, set to launch in June of next year. 16 has seen a similarly long development cycle to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with concept development for Final Fantasy 16 reportedly starting as early as 2015. Final Fantasy is set up to have a major year in 2023 with multiple new games planned.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is in development for the PS5.
