Released earlier this year for mobile devices and Microsoft Windows, Pocket Edition gave Final Fantasy a much more simplified version of the latest numbered entry in the series. This edition streamlined the gameplay for mobile devices and included the complete story for Final Fantasy 15.
The game was released yesterday on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though Square Enix also revealed that it was heading to the Nintendo Switch later on. This likely would have been revealed during yesterday’s delayed Nintendo Direct. Unlike its mobile counterpart, episodes will not be purchased individually but the game will be sold digitally as a complete package. The game runs at $29.99, though it is discounted 40% on PlayStation and Xbox until September 13.
Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition is an abridged version of 2016’s Final Fantasy 15 made to fit on your mobile phone. The realistic graphics were substituted for a more adorable chibi-style and the gameplay was adapted to play in a more episodic structure on the go. While Sony and Microsoft fans will be tied to their televisions playing the re-release of the game, the structure of the title is quite fitting for the portable nature of the Nintendo Switch. Considering Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata once stated that the original game wouldn’t work well on the Switch, Pocket Edition will be a Switch owner’s only way of experiencing Noctis’s journey on Nintendo hardware.
Pocket Edition might be a hard sell for PlayStation and Xbox owners considering that the original version of Final Fantasy 15 could likely be found for much cheaper. Not to mention for a little extra cash, gamers could also get the Royal Edition with all of the DLC included. Of course, considering main entry Final Fantasy games being almost absent on Nintendo consoles since Final Fantasy VI, Pocket Edition will give Nintendo fans a unique glimpse into the franchise’s latest story.
Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition HD is currently available for Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version will be released in the near future.
