As expected, Final Fantasy is at the heart of the drama series. The show blends live-action footage from actors Ren Osugi (who fans may recognize from Full Metal Yakuza and Dead or Alive) and Yudai Chiba (Tensou Sentai Goseiger) with scenes from inside the game. As a father-son duo, Osugi and Chiba’s characters learn to overcome their opposing opinions, differing world-views, and contrasting personalities as they become immersed in the world of Final Fantasy 14.
It all begins when the son gifts his father a PlayStation 4 copy of the title. Chiba’s character joins the game and guides his father through Final Fantasy 14’s difficult missions and quests. However, the son’s true identity is never revealed to Osugi’s strong-willed, paternal character. Through their secretly shared gameplay experience, the two discover more about themselves and each other. While the father learns to accept himself and his child, the son documents the swells and troughs he faces in reconnecting with his father through Final Fantasy 14.
The official Final Fantasy 14: Daddy of Light Twitter account made an announcement earlier today that the show will premiere in Japan on April 16 with the MBS network and on April 18 with TBS. In a translation provided by US Gamer, the tweet also states that the series will hit the Japanese Netflix library on April 20. Global audiences can expect to see the show on the popular streaming service some time this fall. The series’ accompanying website went live alongside the announcement as well.
Games inspiring television series and films isn’t exactly a new concept, as fans have seen big-screen adaptations of World of Warcraft and Tomb Raider. The upcoming drama show certainly isn’t the first film iteration of the Final Fantasy series, either; 2001 saw the release of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Though some of these examples weren’t hits with the critics (or the fans, for that matter), perhaps Final Fantasy 14: Daddy of Light will be a shining exception. Given the recent focus on the title, with Square Enix considering the possibility of Final Fantasy 14 on Nintendo Switch, success for the show certainly seems possible.
