Unlike typical swords and axes, the nimble Scythe gives Reapers of Final Fantasy 14 a mid-range weapon that perfectly supplements their role as a DPS class. However, for players who want to master their role as a Reaper, just which are the best Scythes in the Final Fantasy game and which ones should they focus their attention to obtain as they pursue the endgame?

Updated on January 10, 2023, by Rhenn Taguiam: With the Endwalker expansion serving as the finale of the ongoing Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc that began with A Realm Reborn, fans of Final Fantasy 14 are likely excited to see what’s in store for the hit MMO after this fourth expansion. And for players currently using the new Sage and Reaper Jobs, they’re likely eager to see what awaits their characters in the endgame of the current MMO’s gameplay loop. With that in mind, players who are actively engaged with the Reaper Job might want to grab some of the best Scythes in Final Fantasy 14, including a scythe from the moon, a sickle that looks like a staff, and even a scythe that is rather holy in its aesthetic.

15 Bismuth War Scythe (11th)

When players gather a Phrygian Weapon Coffer from the Junkmongers in Thavnair or Mare Lamentorium, or even in the latter’s Pillar of Industry, chances are high they might be able to obtain a Bismuth War Scythe. Despite its simple stats, the Bismuth War Scythe is evidently one of the more visually-appealing Scythes out there.

Aside from its simple staff base, it’s the Bismuth War Scythe’s top that takes the cake. Near the top of the staff are mechanical components that get into a joint-like base that carries the rest of the weapon. The rear end of the scythe’s blade is a motor-like component with a shorter blade, with the primary scythe having serrated edges, giving it a chainsaw-like appearance. This grittier, more ‘industrial” take on the Scythe easily makes the Bismuth War Scythe an appealing piece to add to the Reaper’s collection, especially since it resembles an Astrologian’s weapon.

14 Palaka War Scythe

The Palaka Maiming Set has this straightforward quality to it that fits the Reaper who has just entered the first steps toward the endgame, and the Palaka War Scythe is an excellent introductory weapon of choice. It’s got decent Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as a focus on Vitality, Strength, and Direct Hit Rate boosts which encourage a straightforward damage build for the Reaper.

Players can obtain the Palaka War Scythe from the Vanaspati Dungeon in Endwalker, which has a required level of 85 and an average Item Level of 510.

13 Manganese War Scythe

The Manganese Behemoth Queen Set has this regal quality that makes the armor set quite stunning for its level, and the Manganese War Scythe has the same sophistication that makes it quite the intimidating-looking weapon for the Reaper. While it lacks a bit on the base Physical Damage and Auto Attack side, it does boast decent-enough Vitality, Strength, and Determination to carry a Reaper through basic dungeons should it have a heavy damage build - something the DPS class could easily pull off.

Players can obtain the Manganese War Scythe from the Junkmongers at Elpis, through the Ironwood Weapon Coffer.

12 Ktiseos Zaghnal

The Ktiseos Maiming Set has quite an imposing appearance, especially with its sleek black outfit with edged details. The Ktiseos Zaghnal is a good addition to this aesthetic, given the weapon’s reverse bladed edge and another end that has the appearance of a hammer. It boasts decent Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as an impressive focus towards Vitality, Strength, and Critical Hit given its boosts.

This weapon works well for a Reaper that wants to focus on a crit-based build, with emphasis on excellent crit hits instead of consistent but lower base damage. Players can obtain the Ktiseos Zaghnal from the Ktisis Hyperboreia Dungeon in Endwalker, which has a required level of 87 and an average Item Level of 515.

11 Chondrite Magitek War Scythe

The Chondrite Maiming Set adds a steampunk officer aesthetic to the usually edgy Reaper, which is a welcome change to its overall appearance. Not to mention, the Chondrite Magitek War Scythe adds a healthy number of gears and coils to the scythe aesthetic, giving the Reaper quite a mechanical appearance quite unlike other tropes.

Granted, the weapon’s aesthetics do compensate for its rather mediocre Physical Damage and Auto Attack, but its decent bonuses towards Vitality, Strength and Critical Hit could carry the Reaper through some of the more basic endgame dungeons designed for the game.

Players can obtain the Chondrite Magitek War Scythe from the Chondrite Weapon Coffer, which they can obtain from the Junkmongers at Labyrinthos or Elpis, the Merchant & Mender, and the Provisions Node in Ultima Thule.

10 Death Sickle

In the classic games, the Death Sickle is a recurring scythe or axe that boasts moderate power and usually comes with an Instant Death condition to unfortunate targets. The same weapon returns to FF14, this time around being one of the signature weapons for the Reaper once they hit the middle rankings of their journey towards the endgame. The weapon boasts decent Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as equal bonuses to Strength and Vitality, with Critical Hit becoming a close second.

This focus on the Critical Hit bonus implies that the Death Sickle is designed for Reapers who want to focus on critical-based builds, which can become quite useful in endgame dungeons that players want to clear as fast as possible. Players can obtain the Death Sickle from Varsarudh at the Agora in Old Sharlayan.

9 Moonward Crux

Despite its name, the Moonward Crux is quite a stylish armor set with sleek black armor pieces that give the Reaper a more heavily-armored appearance. Fitting this archetype is the Moonward Crux, with its unique appearance as a mid-ranged weapon with four edges instead of the typical scythe. This weapon boasts decent Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as an emphasis on Vitality, Strength, and Determination bonuses. It has an over-the-top appearance and a focus on direct damage builds, emphasizing the capabilities of the Reaper to deal consistent damage.

Players can acquire the Moonward Crux through the Allagan Tomestone of Aphorism, which they can then bring to Cihanti in Radz-at-Han.

8 Classical War Scythe

The Classical Eques’s Set takes cues from classical aesthetics, with its dark clothing inspired by times of antiquity as well as the winged circlet to top its armor. Fitting the trope is the Classical War Scythe, which by all means looks like the ordinary scythe. However, this weapon is no pushover, considering its decent Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as bonuses toward Vitality, Strength, and Direct Hit Rate. This weapon seems to emphasize direct damage builds, something the Reaper can capitalize on given its nature as a DPS.

Players can obtain the Classical War Scythe through crafting, with the level-90 recipe being a 2-Star Recipe under the Master Blacksmith IX rank.

7 Radiant’s War Scythe

The Radiant’s Maiming Set has this sophisticated aesthetic that gives the Reaper the appearance of a dragon slayer, with the Radiant’s War Scythe seemingly having the same draconic aesthetic as the armor it comes with. Alongside this unique appearance are decent base stats towards Physical Damage and Auto Attack, as well as bonuses towards Vitality, Strength, and Direct Hit Rate.

This emphasis on direct damage builds can help the Reaper capitalize on their potential to deal consistently high damage numbers - especially with the support of the right heals. Players can obtain the Radiant’s War Scythe through the Allagan Tomestone of Astronomy and the Discal Tomestone from Cihanti in Radz-at-Han.

6 Augmented Radiant’s War Scythe

The true nature of the Radiant’s War Scythe becomes awakened once it becomes the Augmented Radiant’s War Scythe, and alongside it comes a slew of stronger stats. Its Physical Damage and Auto Attack become impressive, while it gets high Vitality, Strength, and Direct Hit bonuses. The renewed focus on Direct Hit Rate in particular makes this weapon ideal for the Reaper to achieve a more damage-focused build, which is quite achievable considering its nature as a DPS class.

Players can obtain the Augmented Radiant’s War Scythe by bringing their Radiant’s War Scythe to Khaldeen in Radz-at-Han and enhancing it with the Radiant Roborant.

5 Asphodelos War Scythe

The Ashpodelos Maiming Set looks quite mundane in contrast to other armor sets in the game, but it’s by no means a pushover. The Asphodelos War Scythe boasts the same “ordinary” appearance, being a pure white scythe that packs quite a punch. Its Physical Damage and Auto Attack remain extremely decent, and its Vitality, Strength, and Critical Hit bonuses are impressive for an endgame weapon. Its focus on criticals proves the Reaper’s potential to deal hard damage, instead of relying on lower, albeit consistent, damage.

Players can obtain the Asphodelos War Scythe by acquiring the Asphodelos Weapon Coffer, which they can obtain via the Asphodelos Mythos IV from Djole in Radz-atHan or Mylenie in Labyrinthos.

4 Rinascita Zaghnal*

Craftable by players who are of Master Blacksmith X ranking, the Rinascita Zaghnal has a recognizable slickness that sets it apart from other Scythes. Compared to other Scythes that are grittier and edgier in appearance, the Rinascita Zaghnal is more mechanical. Boasting a more straightforward staff for a base with some details, its crowning glory is literally its blade components.

The end of its staff base ends with a top that extends to three small rods that are connected to a horizontal base with ornate details, extending to a blade through a stylized steampunk-ish design. However, one of the best parts of the visuals of the Rinascita Zaghnal is its simplicity, as it doesn’t go overboard in its design. Stats-wise, the Rinascita Zaghnal boasts decent Vitality and Strength, making it a heavy hitter.

3 Ultimate Sickle Of The Heavens

One look at the Ultimate Sickle of the Heavens and any Reaper would recognize its potential for greatness. Acquired after the Ultimate Mode of Dragonsong’s Reprise, attaining the Ultimate Sickle of the Heavens means grabbing one of the newest Ultimates introduced in the current expansion.

Aside from its stats, the Ultimate Sickle of the Heavens shines quite literally with its approach to aesthetics. The white, orange, and red glow emanating from the blades give it a pristine sheen that makes it seem out of its world, regardless if players are a part of a Final Fantasy 14 guild or playing solo. Not only that, the intricate runic design at the back of the blade proper adds to the “otherworldly” appeal of the weapon, which works with the blade’s brightness to represent its nature as coming from the heavens.

2 Windswept Zaghnal

Reapers who want a Scythe augmented with the power of the wind should look no further than the Windswept Zaghnal. This is one of the few Scythes in the game that could be acquired from a Trial, with this weapon being attained from the Extreme Mode of the Extreme Trial of Storm’s Crown.

Aesthetically speaking, the Windswept Zaghnal is quite unlike other Final Fantasy weapons with its emphasis on friendlier curves. Unlike other edgier and grittier Scythe designs, the Windswept Zaghnal emphasizes things thematically related to the wind, such as leaves and plumage. In fact, the green tint of the Scythe and its more stylized nature makes it seem more like a staff than a weapon of death.

1 Lunar Envoy’s War Sickle

When players approach Cihanti at Radz-at-Han with an Ultralight Tomestone and some Allagan Tomestone of Causality, they can create the Lunar Envoy’s War Sickle. Appropriately called to fit with the Endwalker expansion’s trip to the Moon, the Lunar Envoy’s War Sickle is definitely technologically-alien in its appearance, quite unlike the aesthetic of other Final Fantasy 14 Companies.

The weapon boasts a more ornate approach to its core body, with an endpoint having an assortment of details and a top comprised of a half-circle crescent with an iridescent gem at the center, coupled with pointed swirling spikes on top. At first glance, one might assume this is a staff than an armament of the Reaper. Boasting some of the highest base Physical Damage and Auto Attack stats in the game, the Lunar Envoy’s War Sickle is a definite must-grab.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is currently available for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS.
